Points collectors always try to earn as many points per transaction as possible. If we can double dip, great, triple dip, even better. This week I will just go over some random techniques to boost your points per dollar ratio. Some of these are promotional, so hurry and cash in on these offers while they last.

Random Extra Points

Hawaiian Airlines/Groupon

Hawaiian Airlines actually has a web browser plugin that will notify you when you land on a site that’s part of its online mall. I’m not huge on collecting HawaiianMiles, but if they’re free, I’ll take ’em. The plugin is called MileFinder and it is how I discovered that you can earn 2.5x HawaiianMiles when using Groupon. Only caveat: You have to use a web browser to earn those miles, not the Groupon app. For those of you not familiar with Groupon, it’s an app to purchase discounted coupons. You can find some really amazing deals on the app at times. Either way, using a web browser instead of the app may be a hassle in certain situations, but if you can make room for a little extra time, I think those 2.5x miles are definitely worth it.

Chase Pay/Walmart

You can earn 10x Ultimate Rewards points just for shopping on Walmart.com throughout the month of August. The only thing you need to do is select Chase Pay at checkout, register if you haven’t done so already, and complete the transaction using Chase Pay and one of these 5 cards:

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred
  • Chase Sapphire
  • Chase Freedom
  • Chase Freedom Unlimited

There is a $250 limit (2,500 points) per card, which means you can potentially earn 12,500 points if you have all 5 cards. I have 3 of them, so my max is 7,500 points. You can also purchase gift cards, including Walmart gift cards, on Walmart.com and earn these extra points. This opens up a whole new plethora of possibilities.

MileagePlus X Back-to-School

The MPX app currently has another promotion. It’s back to school season and the MPX app is one of the greatest tools to maximize your points earnings. Points on MPX are usually capped at 5x, but with this current promotion, you can earn up to 10x MileagePlus miles at select merchants:

  • Athleta 10x
  • Banana Republic 10x
  • Bath & Body Works 10x
  • Buca di Beppo 8x
  • Chili’s 8x
  • Cold Stone Creamery 8x
  • Dell 2x
  • Gap 10x
  • JCPenney 6x
  • Kohl’s 4x
  • Krispy Kreme 8x
  • Nike 10x
  • Old Navy 10x
  • Sears 6x
  • ULTA Beauty 8x
  • Xbox 8x

You can also find the list in the app under Catalog – Back to School Promotion. The MPX app is truly unique in the points and miles world, and it definitely is something United got 100% right. The app itself isn’t flawless, but it’s an incredible way to earn some United miles, which are actually quite valuable.

Bottom Line

Always explore and find new ways to earn extra points and miles. It may take an extra 5 seconds to complete a transaction using some of these techniques, but it pays off in the end. The first time you fly business class for next to nothing, you’ll realize it was worth every bit of the extra effort.
